Please read these Terms of Service ("Terms") carefully before using the Kanatago mobile application ("Service") operated by Kanatago AS ("us", "we", or "our"). Your access to and use of the Service is conditioned on your acceptance of and compliance with these Terms.
1. Medical & Health Disclaimer
Important: Kanatago is a gamified walking experience, not a medical service.
We do not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. The step counts, distances, and other metrics provided by the app are estimates only and should not be relied upon for medical purposes. Always consult with your physician before beginning any new exercise program, including walking regimens.
2. Physical Safety and Assumption of Risk
You acknowledge that using Kanatago requires physical activity in the real world. By using the Service, you agree that:
- Situational Awareness: You are responsible for maintaining awareness of your surroundings at all times. Do not operate any app features while crossing streets, navigating traffic, or traversing difficult terrain.
- Not a Navigation Tool: The routes shown in Kanatago are virtual representations used for gameplay progress, driven entirely by your step count. They are not intended to be used as real-world navigation instructions. We do not guarantee that the virtual routes correspond to safe, walkable paths in the real world.
- Liability Release: You voluntarily assume all risks associated with your physical activity, including but not limited to falls, contact with other pedestrians, effects of weather, traffic, and road conditions. Kanatago AS is not liable for any personal injury, property damage, or death resulting from your use of the app.
3. User Generated Content & Conduct (Zero Tolerance)
Kanatago includes features that allow interaction with others (Teams, Chat, Avatar uploads, and Memories). We have a Zero Tolerance Policy for objectionable content.
Content Standards: You agree not to post, upload, or share content that is:
- Defamatory, discriminatory, hate speech, or mean-spirited.
- Obscene, pornographic, or offensive.
- Harassing, threatening, or doxxing other users.
Content License: By posting text or images (such as "Memories" or "Avatars") to the Service, you grant Kanatago AS a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, display, and distribute said content solely for the purpose of operating the Service (i.e., displaying your Memory or Avatar to other users on the virtual map).
Enforcement: Users can block abusive users and report objectionable content directly within the app. Kanatago AS reviews reported content within 24 hours. Any user found violating these rules will be immediately banned and their content removed.
4. Subscriptions, Payments & Service Access
Kanatago offers both free and paid "Premium" features. The paid tiers allow us to maintain an ad-free environment while covering the costs of cloud storage, real-time synchronization, AI processing, and mapping services.
Subscription & Purchase Terms:
- Service Availability: Paid subscriptions grant access to cloud-dependent features such as Team Mode, Shared Routes, Memories, and extended route limits. If your subscription lapses, access to these specific cloud features may be paused, though your local step history will be preserved.
- Consumables: Features like "Magic Insights" may be offered as consumable in-app purchases. Consumable purchases are final and non-refundable unless required by law.
- Billing: Payment is charged to your Apple ID or Google Play account upon confirmation of purchase.
- Renewal: Subscriptions automatically renew unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
- Cross-Device Access: Your subscription is tied to your App Store/Google Play ID and your Kanatago account. You must be logged in to verify your premium status.
5. Updates and Modifications
We may from time to time develop and provide updates to the Application, which may include upgrades, bug fixes, patches, other error corrections, and/or new features (collectively, including related documentation, "Updates").
You agree that the Application may automatically download and install these Updates to your device (including via "over-the-air" methods). You agree that all Updates will be deemed part of the Application and be subject to all terms and conditions of this Agreement.
6. Disclaimer of Warranties ("As Is")
The Service is provided on an "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" basis. Kanatago AS explicitly disclaims any warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement, and any warranties arising out of course of dealing or usage of trade.
We make no warranty that the Service will meet your requirements or be available on an uninterrupted, secure, or error-free basis. We make no warranty regarding the quality, accuracy, timeliness, truthfulness, completeness, or reliability of any content.
AI-Generated Content: Kanatago utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to generate "Magic Insights" (including location-based Local Lore, route-based Journey Stories, and cinematic StoryTime Recaps). This content is dynamically generated based on your virtual map progression and is provided for entertainment purposes only. AI can occasionally make mistakes or hallucinate facts. Kanatago AS does not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any AI-generated content.
Security & Third-Party Code: While we strive to use commercially reasonable means to secure your data, we cannot guarantee that the Service is immune from cyber-attacks, security breaches, or technical malfunctions. You acknowledge that the Service incorporates third-party software and libraries, and Kanatago AS assumes no liability for defects, vulnerabilities, or failures arising from such third-party components.
7. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Kanatago AS shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses.
In no event shall Kanatago AS's aggregate liability for all claims relating to the Service exceed the greater of fifty US dollars (US $50.00) or the amount you paid Kanatago AS, if any, in the last 12 months.
8. Governing Law
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Norway, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any legal action or proceeding arising under these Terms will be brought exclusively in the federal or state courts located in Oslo, Norway, and the parties hereby irrevocably consent to the personal jurisdiction and venue therein.

2. Data We Collect
- Health Data (Steps): We integrate with Apple Health (HealthKit) to read your step count and distance. This data is used solely to advance your progress on virtual routes. We do not use your health data for advertising purposes, and we do not sell your health data to third parties. Usage is strictly limited to providing the app's core gameplay features.
- Location Data: We access your physical location to help center the map on your current real-world location, e.g., to let you create a custom route starting from where you stand. Note: Your progress along a route and the position of your avatar are calculated virtually based on your step count, not by continuously tracking your background GPS coordinates.
- Virtual Location Context (AI Features): When using the "Magic Insights" AI features (Local Lore, Journey Stories, and StoryTime), the textual name of your current and previous virtual locations on the route (e.g., "Paris, France"), the virtual weather conditions, and your virtual step progress are processed to generate facts and stories. We do not share your physical, real-world GPS coordinates with our AI provider. Furthermore, for StoryTime generations, personal data such as your username, route name, and the contents of your user-generated "Memories" are replaced with anonymous placeholders and are never sent to the AI provider.
- User Content: We collect the routes you create, images you upload for avatars, photos and text messages you upload as "Memories," and the messages you send in chats.
- Account Info: Your email address and username are stored to manage your account. If you choose to sign in or link your account using your Apple ID, we also store the unique identifier provided by Apple.
3. How We Store and Share Your Data
We use Supabase, a secure industry-standard backend service, to store your user profile, chat history, "Memory" data, and route progress.
Visibility in Shared Routes (Teams)
When you voluntarily join a "Shared Route" or "Team," you agree that the following data will be visible to other participants of that specific route:
- Your display name and avatar.
- Your current step count contribution to the team.
- Your calculated virtual location on the route map.
You may leave a route at any time to stop sharing this progress.
Data Security
- Encryption: All data is encrypted in transit (using SSL/TLS) when moving between your device and our servers. The database is also encrypted at rest.
- Chat Privacy: Chat messages are encrypted. Access to this data is strictly limited to authorized personnel for safety and moderation purposes.
- Avatar & Profile Photos: To ensure gameplay functionality, profile avatars are stored in storage buckets with public read access. Anyone with the direct, specific link to an avatar image can view it.
- Memories Privacy: Photos uploaded as "Memories" are stored in restricted-access buckets. These are protected by security rules and are only visible to authorized participants of the specific route where the Memory was dropped.
4. Third-Party Services
We share minimal data with trusted third-party services to operate the app:
- Mapbox: Used to render maps and calculate virtual route geometries.
- Google (Gemini API): Used to generate "Magic Insights" (Local Lore facts, Journey Stories, and StoryTime Recaps) based purely on your virtual location's context and your virtual progress along the route. We do not share your personal identity, health data, real-world GPS history, custom route names, or user-generated Memory contents with Google. For features like StoryTime, this sensitive data is swapped with placeholders and remains securely within the Kanatago ecosystem.
- OpenWeather: Used to fetch current weather conditions for your virtual location to enhance Journey Stories.
- RevenueCat: Used to process and manage subscription status and consumable purchases.
- Apple Authentication: Used to verify your identity when you sign in or link your account.
- Expo Application Services (EAS): Used to deliver over-the-air updates to the Application.
5. Your GDPR Rights
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Right to Access: You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Right to Rectification: You can correct inaccurate data directly within the app settings.
- Right to Erasure ("Right to be Forgotten"): You can delete your account at any time via the app settings, which permanently removes your profile, steps history, Memories, and chat logs from our servers.
- Right to Data Portability: You have the right to request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
6. Data Deletion
You have the right to delete your account at any time. You can do this directly within the app settings via the "Delete Account" button. This will permanently remove your profile, steps history, "Memories", and chat logs from our servers.
